As settlement day approaches, many buyers find themselves balancing the excitement of moving in with the practical demands of preparation. Whether you’re relocating locally or making a larger sea change, it’s important to ensure your move-in plans align with your contract conditions and that you’re legally able to access the property on the date you intend to move.
Your conveyancer can confirm key milestones, including settlement timing, any special conditions affecting possession, and when utilities or removalists should be scheduled. With that clarity in place, here are six practical steps to help you prepare for a smoother transition into your new home.

1. Start with a checklist
The best place to begin is with a straightforward moving checklist. This doesn’t need to be overly detailed, but it should outline the main tasks across each stage of your move. Include:
- Settlement and access dates listed in your contract
- Utility connections and redirection of mail
- Packing timeframes and key deadlines
- Contact details for your conveyancer, real estate agent, and removalist
Your conveyancer may also help you clarify access arrangements, especially in cases where early possession or delayed settlement is negotiated.
2. Book your removalist early
Locking in trusted removalists 4–6 weeks ahead of time helps ensure availability on your preferred date, especially if you’re moving immediately after settlement. Look for local movers with experience in your local suburb, apartment complexes, and building regulations.
When comparing removalist quotes, consider:
- What’s included in the service (packing, disassembly, materials)
- Insurance cover and licensing
- Local reviews and recent client experiences
“A good removalist will treat the job site with care, using floor coverings, wrapping techniques, and confirming access beforehand,” says Ed Burton, CEO of Upmove, a platform where Australians can book vetted removalists. “That attention to detail can prevent last-minute delays or property damage on moving day.”

3. Declutter before you pack
Moving is an ideal time to downsize. Start with storage spaces, wardrobes, and spare rooms, and donate or recycle anything you no longer need. Reducing your load not only simplifies the move but can also lower your removalist costs.
Set aside a folder with important items like ID, contracts, settlement documents, and insurance paperwork. Keep this with you on the day.
4. Pack with care and a plan
Begin packing non-essential items about three to four weeks out, working through your home one room at a time. Label boxes clearly with contents and destination rooms.
If you’re moving into a new or recently renovated home, ask your removalist about added precautions, such as floor protection and padded doorways to avoid accidental damage.
5. Update your details and utilities
Make arrangements to connect utilities like electricity, water, gas, and internet well ahead of your move-in date. Most providers offer online tools for scheduling services around your settlement window.
Redirect your mail through Australia Post and update your address with relevant organisations including banks, insurers, and government agencies such as Medicare, the ATO, and Transport and Main Roads.
Note: If your contract includes a delayed settlement or specific access clauses, your conveyancer can advise on the safest time to schedule these connections.
6. Moving day essentials
Start early and keep a small bag of essentials with you which may include medications, snacks, chargers, keys, and important documents. Make sure your removalist has access to the property, and do a final walk-through once everything is loaded or unloaded.
Once inside, unpack gradually. Take the time to get familiar with your new neighbourhood, introduce yourself to neighbours, and settle in at your own pace.
